On the same day that Rangers announced the highly-rated Ross Wilson as the club’s new sporting director [Rangers], the comments of Jermain Defoe appear to echo the ambitious nature of the appointment.

Speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT, Defoe was direct, determined and absolutely delighted when discussing his time at Rangers so far.

The 36-year-old former England international displayed gratitude for the opportunity afforded him at Ibrox, but also how the on-pitch ambition of the club has him dreaming of becoming a legend.

“I don’t want to talk too much and you have to respect everyone in the league, you have to respect Celtic but if we continue what we’re doing and the lads keep working hard in training and keep listening to the managers and the coaches then with the spirit we’ve got at the club now it’s only a matter of time before we achieve something special,” explains Defoe.

“But it’s important we keep our head down and keep working hard.

“I would be happy to finish there and hopefully achieve something special because the fans deserve it.

“The demands of that football club, the history of that football club and when you walk down the tunnel, on the left-hand side you can see all the legends on the wall and I always say to the lads, ‘if we achieve something special our names will be there’ and we can come back as old men and you look on that wall and your name is there and nobody can take that away from you.

“It’s so nice when you walk into the stadium and you feel that history, you see the trophies on the wall and you want to be a part of that.”

These are special sentiments from Defoe. This is a player who has played at the highest level for the best part of two decades and who has played for some of England’s most historic clubs.

Rangers are clearly once again an attractive prospect for not just players but also staff, as evidenced by the Wilson move.

But that clearly comes down to the ambitions of those at pitchside, those on the pitch and the men in suits funding all of this off it.

Defoe speaks about the heady ambitions for silverware. Wilson was visibly excited about the ambitions of club chairman Dave King even two years ago.

If you in any way doubt that Rangers are serious about the club’s future, you need only listen to the sounds coming out of it from the likes of the England striker Defoe and new Sporting Director Wilson.
