Rangers are set to come up against a new opposition threat today in the form of James Wilson.

The on-loan Manchester United starlet has been a revelation at Pittodrie so far this season. Making a total of five appearances so far in the Granite City and bagging one goal, that doesn’t tell the full story.

Wilson has looked extremely impressive and lively since joining Aberdeen. He’s taken all of his experience from playing first-team matches for Man Utd up with him.

For just 22 years of age, Wilson has experienced plenty. Loan stints at Sheffield United, Brighton, and Derby County have been great for his development. During the 2014/15 campaign, he also made an incredible 17 appearances for Man Utd. In terms of experience, he’s done plenty for his tender age.

Rangers are used to facing the likes of Sam Cosgrove and Adam Rooney when facing Aberdeen. In other words, strikers that are fairly immobile. The same, however, cannot be said of Wilson.

Strong attributes

The Englishman makes great runs, has a turn of pace, and is lethal in front of goal. A lack of consistent game-time has put a blot on his career, but if he starts today, he’ll be a real pest.

Connor Goldson has been extremely impressive since arriving at Ibrox. Partner by Joe Worrall today, they need to keep things tight. If Wilson starts, that makes the challenge doubly as difficult as opening day when Rangers came away from Pittodrie with a 1-1 draw.

Former Manchester United academy insider Clayton Blackmore told Manchester Evening News that Wilson as the “best youngster he’s ever worked with”.

Derek McInnes pulled off a real coup in luring the Manchester United man to Pittodrie. Given his past and his pedigree, he could’ve easily found a Championship club down in England. He’s sped up the Dons going forward, and whenever he plays there’s a freshness to them.

If he does make an appearance, he’ll be Aberdeen’s main goal threat. For Rangers, however, he’ll be a new threat. He simply doesn’t fit the bill of what Aberdeen strikers tend to be.

The Gers can’t afford to be taken by surprise if he starts today. If they are, then it could be a painful afternoon. If they aren’t, then Rangers are likely to be booking their place in the Betfred Cup final.
