Rangers captain James Tavernier has claimed that Rangers have closed the gap on Celtic this season.
The marauding right-back has also slammed the Rangers’ side’s inconsistency this year.
Tavernier was speaking to Sky Sports in an exclusive interview. And whilst the former Newcastle youth believes Rangers must start performing consistently to achieve their title dream, he doesn’t think we’re too far away.
“If you put us and Celtic side-by-side and put two of our best XIs on the football pitch, then yeah we’ve definitely closed that gap,” said Tavernier.
“We were unlucky in the game at the weekend, going down to 10 men. It might’ve been a different game if it had went to eleven.
“Outsiders are maybe looking at the league table and the points difference. It might not look that way but it’s that level of consistency that we’ve got to show throughout the season.”
Tavernier also spoke about taking two or three steps forward and then taking one back. Rangers have performed at a very high level at times this season.
But too often the club has not matched that across the season. This is probably the biggest difference between the two sides at present.
Tavernier sums it up by saying “If you want to contend for the title, if you want to win the title, you can’t afford to make those mistakes.”
