James Tavernier has presided over plenty of calamities as Rangers captain.

But none are potentially as big as the shock Scottish Cup defeat to Queen’s Park which threatens to leave the club trophyless this season.

Rangers have been sent crashing out of the Cup after an ‘unacceptable’ display at Ibrox which saw the team fail to create enough clear-cut chances.

James Tavernier had his role to play too, the Rangers captain stepping up and missing an injury time penalty which would’ve bailed the side out of trouble.

James Tavernier reacts to Rangers penalty miss

A despondent James Tavernier faced the media after Rangers crashed out of the Scottish Cup at the hands of Queens Park.

The Rangers captain branded the club’s performance against the Spiders ‘unacceptable’ and commented on the penalty he missed.

Admitting he has ‘got to do better’, the Rangers captain has also urged his teammates to take ‘accountability’.

”Just unacceptable,” Tavernier told RangersTV. “Can’t be losing at home.

”Can’t be having 30 shots at goal, maybe believe it’s 12 shots on target.

”I’ve got to do better with the penalty but yeah, we all have to take accountability. Everybody.

”Unacceptable. Just as simple as that.

”I wouldn’t really touch on tempo. I think we create chances but not good enough chances.

”We can’t be shooting that many times at goal or shooting the ball over the bar too many times and then give up an easy goal.

”We can’t be doing that.”

Rangers captain reacts to fan protests

James Tavernier’s paradoxical Rangers record continues to raise major questions over the skipper’s Ibrox legacy.

Tavernier, 33, has produced some monumental moments for the club over the years but has also presided over some monumental failures.

The defeat to Queen’s Park is certainly up there and James Tavernier admits that the Rangers team fell short of expectations at Ibrox.

The Gers skipper also claims that the club’s furious support have ‘every right to be mad’ with the floundering Rangers squad.

”It comes with being a Rangers player,” said Tavernier. “You have expectations, you’ve got to deliver.

”If you don’t, rightly so, you will hear the brunt of the fans and that’s exactly what we’ve deserved today.

”You can’t be losing at home against a Championship team, it’s as simple as that, and they’ve got every right to be mad at us.”
