Eros Grezda’s Rangers outings have been minimal so far, and now is the perfect time for him to start stepping up.
Steven Gerrard has preferred to stick by Daniel Candeias this term. No wonder either, as the Portuguese wide-man has shown plenty of commitment to the cause since Gerrard walked through the Ibrox gates.
Candeias’ energy is probably second to none in the team, and he charges down more lost causes than anyone. The problem with him, however, is how wasteful he is in the final third. Rangers often work moves well down to Candeias, who often finds a lot of space down the right flank. When the final ball has to be high-quality, however, it often isn’t.
This isn’t a dig at Candeias. We all know his talents and what he’s not good at. At the moment, however, Rangers need someone to start taking the weight of creativity off Ryan Kent’s shoulders.
Grezda should be that man. He’s had pundits in his homeland claiming he’ll be worth £20million one day. With just four Rangers appearances to his name and no starts, his impact has been poor so far.
Getting to full-fitness
Yes, the Albanian international wasn’t fully-fit when he arrived at Ibrox. That’s bought him some time, but lately he’s been getting more time off the bench for Rangers. He even started Albania’s last international match against Jordan.
Candeias has done well this season so far. He’s bagged four assists and one goal in his 18 Rangers appearances so far this season. If his crossing was a lot better, however, he could be nearly in double figures for assists.
Rangers need something fresh after their 1-0 loss to Aberdeen on Sunday. Grezda is supposed to be one of this season’s star-signings, but we’ve still yet to see him start a competitive game.
Rangers face Kilmarnock on Wednesday, and Candeias could do with a rest given the amount of games coming up. He remains Gerrard’s number one right-winger, and has earned that label this campaign.
It’s now time for the apparently match-fit Grezda to show us what he’s all capable of. He was brought in to make an impact this season, and Rangers need their key players to start providing.
If he is what we’re led to believe, then there’s no reason to let hem fester on the bench any longer. It’s time for Grezda to stand up and be counted.
