Steven Davis’ Rangers return feels like a formality at this point, but we’re just waiting on when. Yet is it about to come sooner than we all thought?
The Southampton star doesn’t appear to be wanted at St Mary’s Stadium, and has made just one Premier League appearance this season. Added to that, his contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
Rangers are apparently keen on the midfielder, with Davis looking for an exit from Saints. According to the Daily Express, Steven Gerrard is certainly keen on luring him back to the place he adores the most.
It remains to be seen, of course, whether this turns out to truly be the case. Southampton have a plethora of midfield talent, however, and Davis has played his part in their recent success.
Wanting a return
Earlier this season, Davis told a fan that he would hopefully make a return to Ibrox one day. He’s also claimed in the past that he would’ve stayed at Ibrox had administration and liquidation not kicked in.
Losing a player with the quality of Davis was one of the most bitter blows about dropping down the divisions. He remains a top talent, and has even managed to improve his game despite being 33-years of age.
There’s no denying the fan reaction to luring the Northern Irishman back would be extremely positive. Whether a deal is doable is another matter, but Davis will understand that Rangers can’t compete with the Premier League for wages.
If a deal is done in January, you have to wonder what that would mean for the likes of Ovie Ejaria or Scott Arfield. Certainly, one of those two would have to drop out to accommodate Davis, and he would be accommodated. A player with the quality of Davis certainly won’t be spending much time on the bench.
For now, however, it all remains as speculation. But if it does go ahead, supporters would surely be delighted at the deal.
