Is Rangers' away form really as big a concern as made out?

Rangers’ away form has been the subject of much critique over the last week, but is it truly fair?

Yes, Rangers haven’t won away from home since February in the league. That victory was a 4-1 success at St Johnstone in one of Rangers’ more swashbuckling displays last season.

Since then, the Gers haven’t won away from Ibrox domestically. Surely, however, you can’t judge this side on last season’s displays?

Not winning at Aberdeen and Motherwell was extremely disappointing. The Ibrox side were the better side in both contests, but failed to win due to last-minute goals. Despite that, there’s no excuses for the displays at Parkhead and the Toni Macroni Arena. Those matches were nothing short of awful, and Steven Gerrard has to take the flak for that.

Many seem to have forgotten, but Rangers do have a couple of away wins to their name already this season. A terrific 1-0 victory over NK Osijek in the Europa League qualifiers appears to have gone unnoticed. Rangers were also convincing in a 3-1 dismantling of Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

Yes, Rangers have won away from Ibrox since February. The only thing is that those wins weren’t in the Premiership.

Games didn’t need winning

It’s also worth noting that many of Rangers’ Europa League games didn’t require wins away from home. Rangers were defending leads at Shkupi, Maribor, and Ufa in the qualifiers. The onus wasn’t on Gerrard’s men to win the game, and trying to do so would’ve put qualification in jeopardy.

Celtic have yet to win away from home in the Premiership this season also. Rangers aren’t alone in their away-day woes so far this season, and certain people would do well to remember that.

Nobody is denying the standards a club like Rangers should have. Not winning any of four away matches in the league shouldn’t be happening at this club. This is an institution with a history success. If the club are to be where they want to be, not winning in four consecutive away games won’t be good enough.

But it’s widely acknowledged that Rangers are still a work in progress. Gerrard is only at the beginning of his tenure, and winning the title whilst being a huge achievement shouldn’t be expected.

It’s not great form to go four league trips without a win, but to go all guns blazing and make a meal out of it? It’s excessive to say the least.
