Is it time Rangers rested Connor Goldson for £3m man Filip Helander?

Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson has been a stalwart figure in the Rangers defence over the last two seasons.

A towering, commanding presence, he’s the vocal leader of the backline and – until Ryan Kent arrived [Sky Sports] – was the most expensive member of our team (£3.5m).

But in the last few weeks there’s been a real shakiness in his game, and with a Swedish international desperate for an opportunity, is it time he was benched?

This isn’t pushing the panic button over the defender’s high-profile blunder against Celtic last weekend.

The big centre-half may well have handed Celtic the opportunity to take the lead on the plate, but his general distribution has always come under criticism from some quarters.

Our rivals merely pounced on it.

There’s an argument here that Goldson looks too comfortable in the first team; that the 26-year-old himself believes his place in the side is almost guaranteed.

That said, up until his mistake last week, Goldson actually played well. There were some strong defence interceptions, challenges and headers in there too.

But at times he can be very wasteful and it’s his passing and distribution which comes most under fire from fans.

Filip Helander signed for £3m from Serie A side Genoa in the summer [RangersTV] and has barely had a sniff. Granted, Niko Katic’s immense form has prevented that from happening.

But is it time the defender on the other side took a step back to recapture his best and most commanding form?
