Is it time Rangers moved on from reported £20m Ibrox distraction?

As Rangers boss Steven Gerrard questions whether Alfredo Morelos is all there amid transfer interest from Lille, should Rangers move on from the distraction surrounding the forward?

For almost every transfer window since the Colombian striker has moved to the club Morelos has been linked with mega-money moves abroad.

From China to Qatar and numerous European countries in between, the striker has been the subject of interest which has never quite piqued Rangers’ interest.

But in this transfer window, the interest from Ligue 1 club Lille has been so involved that for the first time there appears to be proper friction growing between the player and club.

Gerrard called a lacklustre Morelos out after the Leverkusen result and granted, Morelos responded with a double against St. Mirren.

Morelos himself also reaffirmed his desire to perform at Rangers despite the constant press scrutiny and reports surrounding an exit [WinSportsTV].

But weeks later the Rangers gaffer is still giving frustrated soundbites in the press claiming he is “disappointed” with the situation and suggesting Morelos has “had his head turned” [Express].

The situation clearly continues to be a great source of frustration with Rangers’ position not helped by the comments of Lille president Gerard Lopez this week.

The Les Dogues chief explained that Lille would be taking full advantage of the extended transfer window and suggested the French side may well return for the player in the coming weeks [talkSPORT].

So now Rangers appear left at a frustrating crossroads, with the player not performing at his highest level and a growing frustration over the situation threading through player, club and management.

It’s difficult to call but with the Gers holding out for £20m it’s only really worth it if the bid comes in early or in the meantime Morelos is performing at that level for the Ibrox club.

At the minute, everyone is suspended in transfer limbo and no-one is being helped by the prospect of the window being opened until October.

One way or another, Rangers are going to need to resolve this situation, with the reported interest in Alfredo Morelos from elsewhere proving a bigger distraction to Rangers than ever.
