Former Chelsea and England star Joe Cole may be a secret Ranger, after claiming he wishes he could’ve played for the club.

Cole, who is now retired from football, has been keeping an eye on Steven Gerrard’s progress at Ibrox. He also stated that he hopes the Liverpudlian stays in Glasgow for the foreseeable future.

Added to that, Cole has admitted that his favourite player growing up was Paul Gascoigne. It appears that the Premier League title-winner has more links to Rangers than anyone realised.

And, speaking in the Scottish Sun today, Cole has stated that he wished he could’ve pulled on the light blue jersey at Ibrox.

“Rangers is a club I’d have loved to have played for. Gazza was my favourite player. I remember watching all his games.

“A move there for me never quite happened but the club holds a special place in my heart because I was a massive Gazza fan.

“I’d imagine it’s a great place to manage too. I reckon he’s there for the long haul (Gerrard). He probably wants to be the man to turn it round up there.”

A missed chance for Rangers and Cole

Cole certainly has a CV that would’ve been welcomed at Ibrox. He managed an incredible 716 matches throughout his professional career across seven different clubs.

He also won three Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the League Cup down south with Chelsea. Added to that, Cole scored 10 times in 56 appearances for England.

Cole had both the personality and quality to play for Rangers back in his day. Having him in Walter Smith’s three-in-a-row side would’ve been interesting. Unfortunately, however, a move never seemed close to being done between Rangers and the Englishman.

Instead, both parties will have to just settle in imagining what might’ve been had the move been made. It seems, however, that Cole will continue following the club regardless of the missed opportunity.
