Rangers have appointed Philippe Clement and his former striker Mbwana Samatta has sent a message of support.

The hunt for Michael Beale’s successor is over after a two-week search.

Rangers appointed Belgian boss Philippe Clement on Sunday, handing him a three-and-a-half-year deal at Ibrox.

The 49-year-old has been out of management for just a matter of months having been sacked by Monaco at the end of last season.

A three-time title winner in Belgium, Clement is now looking to get back on track and prove his trophy-winning credentials once again.

Clement has taken to Instagram to celebrate his Rangers move, admitting that it is a ‘great honour’ to make the switch to Ibrox.

Clement added that he can’t wait to get started with a first game against Hibernian coming up this weekend.

Buried in a raft of comments from Rangers fans was a message from PAOK striker Mbwana Samatta, who played under Clement at Genk.

Samatta was a goal machine under Clement, smashing 36 goals in 71 games during their time together.

Samatta still has great respect for Clement and took to Instagram to state ‘Congratulations coach and all the best’, still taking a keen interest in his Rangers move.

Just a few months after Clement left Genk, Samatta secured a big Premier League transfer as Aston Villa forked out £8.5million in January 2020.

The Tanzania international didn’t really get going in England and was quickly loaned to Fenerbahce, eventually turning the move permanent.

Loan moves to Royal Antwerp and Genk didn’t really get Samatta back on track and he has now joined Greek side PAOK permanently.

It’s fair to say that the best period of Samatta’s career came under Clement and he has struggled to consistently recapture his form without him.

Maybe Clement can now have a similar impact on the Rangers attackers with the likes of Danilo and Cyriel Dessers maybe needing that magic touch which benefited Samatta so handsomely.
