On the day after we crashed out of Europe, it’s apt we speak about one of the best things we took from the run. Borna Barisic joined the ranks at Ibrox after being bowled over by the support when NK Osijek came to town.
Last night against Rapid, Barisic was classy, composed and cultured on the left. It didn’t aid our cause that he’s only returning from a lengthy, over two-month injury lay off.
But how we’ve missed him. He looks a player of the highest quality and class when he gets going. From his debut free kick assist against St. Mirren to the lung-bursting run and assist for Lafferty’s equaliser in Villarreal, he’s shown flashes of what he can do.
Now, he just needs to keep fit and get a run in the side. I’ve no doubt he can become a massive part of what we’re trying to do here.
He has a piercing cross and wicked left foot. He’s a strong and combative defender. He’s also a Croatia international.
With fellow Osijek import, Albanian Eros Grezda, in front of him, we could have a very strong left hand side.
But Grezda too needs time to get up and running following his injury problems.
With Borna Barisic now back in the side, we can begin to get closer to the vision Gerrard has for this Rangers team. Halliday and Flanagan don’t offer the balance Barisic can to Tavernier.
And if there’s to be a title race, you can bet the Croatian will be right at the centre of it. Well, maybe left of centre.
