News broke this week that Rangers are interested in loaning Everton youngster Kieran Dowell come January.
The England U21 International made his breakthrough at Goodison Park two seasons ago. He also impressed on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, scoring 9 in 38 Championship games.
Dowell, 21, has 11 caps for the England U21s and two goals, and clearly needs game time. He certainly looks a real talent on paper and he could be the answer to Steven Gerrard’s problems with creativity in midfield.
But would any signing scupper a move for the other number 10 linked with Ibrox?
Steven Davis pips Kieran Dowell in the short term
Whilst there is something exciting about being linked with Dowell, we need players who can mount a challenge now.
Davis, 33, might have 12 years on the England youngster, but we’re crying out for his experience. You can’t whack some youthful exuberance from a talented player with a point to prove, but it is experience in midfield we lack.
Rangers are in the middle of a title battle and need someone who can come in and deliver right away. I believe that’s the Northern Irishman.
Davis brings that experience in abundance as well as real, high-class ability. But we could be priced out of a move with the midfielder having £60kpw wages.
If it’s between signing Kieran Dowell or Steven Davis this January, there’s only one winner.
