In an interview with the Daily Record, Hull City player, Greg Docherty, has expressed his frustration at how he was treated by Steven Gerrard during his time at Rangers.

The midfielder realised a life-long dream when he joined the Gers on a long-term deal in January 2018 but after the appointment of the Liverpool legend as the manager, he barely featured.

Docherty didn’t make a single league appearance under Gerrard and despite impressing during loan spells at Shrewsbury Town and Hibernian, he still found himself surplus to requirements at the start of the 2020/21 season.

That prompted him to seal a move to Hull City and he’s started well at the KCOM Stadium.

While he’s excited about challenges ahead, it’s clear that he isn’t satisfied by how he was treated at Ibrox.

“I fully understood there were good players in front of me but I didn’t want to stagnate anymore, it just wasn’t for me,” he told the Daily Record. “I know I went in every day and gave 100 per cent. Nobody could give me a reason why I wasn’t playing. That’s the biggest frustration.”

“During all my conversations with Gerrard and the coaching staff, nobody could explain why I wasn’t playing. Maybe if I’d been given that then it would have made things easier for me.

“It just comes down to the current regime and the style of play they want – and that’s fine. That’s why I needed to take charge of my career again and regain some control. It’s a relief not to have all the uncertainty and the questions from family, friends and supporters. Mentally, that was tough.”

Hull City player Greg Docherty expresses frustration at Rangers treatment – Verdict

Docherty’s disappointment with how things went across his two-and-a-half-year spell at Rangers is both clear and understandable.

The 24-year-old played in the odd pre-season match and cup fixture but he wasn’t Steven Gerrard’s signing and the Gers boss showed very little faith in him, despite his strong performances elsewhere.

Docherty is a high-energy player with a very different style to the likes of Glen Kamara and a more limited passing range than Steven Davis.

However, he has shown he can do well both in the Premiership and in the EFL and plenty of Gers supporters wanted to at least see him given a chance to prove himself before he was moved on.

If he really wasn’t given a reason for being consistently omitted from squads over such a long period, he certainly has a right to be dissatisfied with how he was treated.
