Celtic boss Neil Lennon has looked to ease the fall-out of the club’s 2-0 defeat to Rangers by telling his lacklustre players to “hold their heads up high”.

The Celtic manager has come in for massive criticism in the wake of the defeat with Rangers looking a much better and more well-oiled machine than their Parkhead counterparts.

But a visibly dejected Lennon has taken full responsibility for the defeat and told his players to retain a sense of pride for past achievements.

“These players are amazing and have done amazing things,” said Lennon [BBC Sport].

“I’m confident they’ll continue to do amazing things for the club. We weren’t very good, particularly in the second half, on Saturday and that’s on me. I have to take responsibility for the performance, not the players.

“There is a long way to go. We are not happy with the result but there is plenty of time to improve and bounce back.”

Naturally, a Rangers support still buoyed by Saturday’s result have taken to Twitter to react to the Celtic boss’ comments which many believe is a “deflection” from deeper issues:

Whilst Rangers fans have quite rightly enjoyed the last few days the real business starts again tomorrow against Standard Liege and at the weekend against Livingston.

Rangers have proven they have what it takes to get big results but the club must now go and mop up against the so-called lesser sides of the division.

The only real way for Rangers to keep pressure on Celtic is to keep on winning – otherwise, Neil Lennon could be proved right.
