Rangers Europa League run has been a major money spinner for the club so far. But Thursday’s tie with Rapid Vienna could itself be worth a new player in January.
If Rangers are to defeat Rapid and go through on Thursday they could earn a succession of bonuses which will net the Gers over €2m.
Merely getting this far has netted us an estimated €11.5m. That extra €2m would just add to the financial boost Rangers have had from qualifying for this tournament.
So how does it work?
Well, we get €500,000 for making it to the round of 32. The winners of the group get €1mn, the runners up €500k.
Given we need to win to go through, we’d also get a win bonus of €570k. That’s €1.57m if we finish second in Group G and €2.07m if we finish top.
We will finish top as long as we win and Villarreal don’t on Thursday. Here’s a breakdown of the Europa League bonuses here.
Looking at how this tie benefits Rangers financially shows just how big a win would be for the club. It’s major in confidence and footballing terms, massive in terms of marketing and hugely important in terms of cash.
It also adds an extra dimension to our tie against Rapid Vienna on Thursday. With a returning Alfredo Morelos and Scott Arfield, we’re surely better set than we have been in our last two matches.
It’s big one for Rangers. This is the XI I think Gerrard will pick on the night.
