Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell has slammed pundit Chris Sutton.
Todd Cantwell, who joined Rangers in January 2023, has said that former Celtic striker Chris Sutton praised him when he was at Norwich City in England.
Cantwell has noted that the BBC Sport and Sky Sports pundit’s attitude changed after he moved to Rangers.
The 25-year-old midfielder has also hammered Sutton for talking about Rangers a lot on Twitter and for picking up feuds with him.
Cantwell has said that the former Norwich striker does it because he wants to stay relevant among the Celtic fans.
The 25-year-old has added that he finds former Celtic striker Sutton’s attitude “very bizarre”.
Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell tears into Chris Sutton
Cantwell said on The Beautiful Game Football Podcast: “There’s just one thing that I cannot understand when it comes to pundits that used to play football which is jumping on players or what I would call Chris Sutton does is an attention-seeker.
“I find that very bizarre.
“If you had a good career, why are you sat on Twitter hammering into a lad that you had an interview with and said, ‘You are an amazing person, an amazing player’ back at Norwich.
“You can’t just forget that.
“So, for me, this isn’t even real.

“What he is doing is playing up to obviously his links with Celtic.
“He needs to stay relevant, and that’s sad for me because if I am an ex-player on Twitter tweeting a 25-year-old trying to stay relevant, I would look at myself and go, ‘What am I doing?’”
Cantwell added: “The reason that I have had a couple of chomps, and I don’t chomp on much, is because he spoke to me at Norwich and he told me what a fantastic footballer I was, the world is at your feet, Todd, you are a great guy, Todd, all of this, and then I sign for Rangers, ‘Oh, yeah, I will just forget everything I said before, I am going to start a feud with you on Twitter’.
“I am like. ‘What?’”
My View: Todd Cantwell has a point
In my opinion, Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell does have a point about Chris Sutton.
I understand that as a pundit, you have to give your opinion and have to be brutally honest about it.
So, if in a game Cantwell does not do well, then, yes, Sutton should air his opinion and criticise him.
What I have a problem with is pundits picking up feuds with current players on social media and in public.
There is no need for that.
You have to stay objective as a pundit.
Pundits such as Chris Sutton are former players, and they should understand how footballers feel when they are being criticised.
Of course, if a player does not do well, then there will be criticism.
It is part of playing football.
But, there is no need to get personal or start a public spat.
I also think that Cantwell should start ignoring Sutton from now on.
I do not think that the Rangers midfielder should respond to anything from Sutton.
Let the BBC Sport and Sky Sports pundit say whatever he wants to say about him.
Cantwell should let his football do the talking.
