As the incredible debate over whether St. Johnstone scored at the weekend or not tragically rages on, Rangers player Steven Davis is the one missing out.
The Northern Irish captain epitomised his recent displays with the double goal-line block, the second of which is probably the best I’ve ever seen.
How the midfielder manages to get his heel up and stop that going in is incredible. And yes, that means he absolutely stopped it going over the line.
The fact Davis makes two and not just one goal-saving clearance really did sum up the hard-working, positive, never-say-die display the Northern Irish legend put in.
The talented midfielder has been a class apart in recent weeks and is arguably playing amongst his best ever football for Rangers, despite being 34.
His performances haven’t gone unnoticed by manager Steven Gerrard, who is also adamant that the ball never crossed the line [BT Sport].
“It wasn’t a goal. Steven did well on two occasions and I thought he was man of the match by some distance. I thought he was outstanding.
“The linesman deserves credit for getting that one right because it could have been a big moment.
“It could have put us under pressure late on but with our all-round application I felt we thoroughly deserved the clean sheet.”
Steven Gerrard is absolutely spot on about both things here.
Both that the ball did not cross the line, and that Steven Davis was utterly magnificent as Rangers romped to a 4-0 win away to St. Johnstone.
The only thing any ridiculous posturing over the clearance does is detract from the immense work Davis put in to make it.
