The Rangers centre back pairing has been the subject of much debate this season.

Goldson and Katic, Katic and Worrall, Worral and Goldson. There was a lot of chopping and changing.

But in the background, perhaps Rangers most accomplished centre back was yet to appear on the scene. Now, the return and introduction of 38-year-old Gareth McAuley is bringing a composure and calmness the Rangers defence has struggled for recently.

Even if he did net an OG against Hearts.

Is McAuley and Goldson the best Rangers centre back pairing?

The general consensus with this seems to be a resounding yes. On domestic soil at least.

Alongside McAuley, Goldson, still only 25 himself, has much more freedom. With the younger Nikola Katic and Joe Worrall he’s the experienced head. He must stick back and can’t commit, he can’t get on the ball as much, it’s his responsibility to marshal the defence.

With the experience of McAuley alongside him, it relaxes Goldson. It allows him to get on the ball, take risks and play his game on his terms.

Even approaching 40, McAuley is a towering figure at the back and is a superb vocal presence. He is organised, resolute and a top defender.

Between McAuley and Connor Goldson, Gerrard might just have found his best Rangers centre back pairing.

And it could be huge for any title race.
