Rangers pitch invasion: harmless or embarrassing?

Another win in one of Scottish football’s more humble arenas, another pitch invasion.
Following on from all the stick Rangers fans received after taking to the field against Partick Thistle last year, and then at St. Johnstone last month, some fans streamed onto the pitch as Alfredo Morelos made it three against Livingston.
Yes, these are not iconic victories. Nor are they cup wins or historic comebacks. But “exuberance” seems to have taken hold in the Rangers support anyway.
Fans are split on the whether they’re either just a bit of fun, or an embarrassment to the club. No prizes for guessing which option our rivals are indulging in.

“Pitch invasion” a strong word

The word “pitch invasion” is also mightily strong. Especially when it’s a few punters rushing the front of a stand in one corner.
Also forget the older guys, it’s about the kids. And there’s a real innocence and excitement in the images. Kids breaking free from the pitch-side stands and rushing to their heroes.
Football is supposed to be a fun game. Supporters are supposed to be passionate. Kids don’t have to be quite as serious as the rest of us. As for the older guys, you’d think they’d remember better days and more justifiable invasions. But even then, it is really just harmless fun.

The faux outrage from across Scottish football is tiresome. Let people enjoy themselves.
That’s also excusing all the obvious health and safety issues. Clubs are supposed to ensure this doesn’t happen.
But whilst a pitch invasion every game would begin to look pretty awkward and have most of us blushing, I can’t see any problem with young fans streaming onto the pitch to grab a few moments of celebrations with their team, every now and again of course.
Especially when the players, Alfredo in particular, are so happy to see them.

Rangers ran out 3-0 winners against Livingston, with three players getting an 8/10 in our match ratings.
