Hamilton linchpin Gogic eyes ‘big statement’ win over Rangers

Alex Gogic has confidently asserted that Hamilton Accies are well capable of knocking Rangers out of the Scottish Cup this afternoon, as quoted by the Daily Record.

The Gers travel to the Fountain of Youth Stadium for an early kick-off in a Fifth Round clash.

It has been plain sailing up until this point after a 2-0 win over Stranraer at the previous stage, but the Cypriot thinks there’s a chance of an upset this time around.

“We have been enjoying playing good games, but we just have to get that win, and it’s a knock-out, so we have to focus and try our best to stay in the cup,” said Gogic, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“It would mean a lot, especially to take Rangers out of the cup. That would be a big statement.

“It’s not easy, but it’s possible. It’s football, it’s one game. You have to beat big teams to win the cup, so we can do that now, or in the final.

“It’s a cup game, it’s a knock-out and everything can happen – Greece won the Euros in 2004, so exactly that.”

Verdict

Even after a rocky start to 2020, Rangers are massive favourites heading into this one. Currently second in the Premiership table, they are a whopping 41 points better off than second-bottom Accies.

If Steven Gerrard’s side turn up and perform well, they will progress to the next round.

They can’t afford to take this opposition lightly, though. As Gogic has eluded to, their recent performances have deserved more than they’ve yielded.

They took the lead in the first half against Celtic last weekend, and were in the contest for over an hour, despite being reduced to ten men. Then, on Wednesday night, a missed penalty was all that prevented them from earning three points at St Mirren.

If they are to push Rangers close this afternoon, Gogic will be key. Something of a linchpin in the side, he’s played in all but one their Premiership fixtures this season, and impressed when sitting in front of the back four in Paisley in midweek.
