Half-Term Report: Joe Worrall

Following on from our assessment of Gareth McAuley, we take a look at the impact of fellow centre-back, Joe Worrall.
The defender arrived on loan from Nottingham Forest with a big reputation.
With 50 Championship appearances and a valuation of £7.2 million, he looked a great addition. Especially, considering Forest reportedly turned down a whopping £11.5 million bid for him just last January.

He started positively, performing well alongside Connor Goldson in the draw at Villarreal.
That performance helped him become a regular in the side throughout October and November.
However, a poor showing away at Dundee saw him heavily criticised. It was only when Gareth McAuley picked up an injury against Hibs, that Worrall got another opportunity.

Inconsistency has characterised his contributions so far. He has played a part in six Gers clean sheets, and was particularly solid against Villarreal.
Yet, at other times, he has looked an accident waiting to happen and been shoddy in possession.
He saved his best performance for the biggest occasion, though.

Overall, then, a mixed report card. Plenty of blemishes, but also some considerable positives.
He looked a Rolls Royce of a player last Saturday.
McAuley will certainly have a tough time winning his place back, if Worrall continues to reach those heights in 2019.
