Greg Docherty continued his development at the weekend with a fine performance and goal for Shrewsbury. And he’s been further rewarded at the English Football League named him in their team of the week.

The box-to-box midfielder took the challenge up himself after he was told he’d struggle for game time at Ibrox. He asked Steven Gerrard to let him go out on loan, and he hasn’t looked back.

The midfielder has really impressed at Shrewsbury so far, playing six matches and scoring two goals. Making the team of the week is no mean feat. The team is made up of the top performers from the Championship to League two.

Greg can be like a new signing next season

Rangers invested £650k in Docherty from Hamilton last January. Initially, the 22-year-old found it difficult to settle during a tumultuous time for the club.

He made 14 appearances in total in the latter half of the season but never completely set the heather alight. At times the midfielder was trying a little too hard.

But at Shrewsbury Docherty seems to be a player reignited. And it can only be a good thing for Rangers. Watch his tidy finish from Shrewsbury’s weekend game with Southend below.

Rangers fans and ex-players alike are urging the youngster on to success. It showed real bravery and courage to responsibly move down south for game time.

Such is his drive and commitment I’ve no doubts Greg Docherty will return to Rangers a stronger player. In fact, he could be like a new signing next year.

The fact he’s also a diehard bluenose makes all this even better.
