Graeme Souness is many things, one thing he has never been is shy and retiring as the former Rangers boss proved for Galatasaray in 1996.

Planting a Gala flag in the centre circle of fierce rivals Fenerbahce’s pitch became an iconic moment in the now retired Sky Sports pundit’s managerial career.

Linked with a return to Ibrox recently, he hasn’t been seen yet, however, Graeme Souness has returned to Galatasaray with the famous flag once again.

Galatasaray have just been crowned SuperLig champions and what better way to celebrate than a former manager recreating one of the most iconic football moments of the 90s.

Graeme Souness’s management career after leaving Rangers maybe didn’t go in the direction that he would have wanted it to but he clearly made an impression with Galatasaray in Turkey.

Graeme Souness’s Galatasaray moment is one to remember

In his time at Rangers he was never far from controversy both with the authorities and with his own players.

On the pitch, by 1986, his powers had started to wane a little but the passing range was still evident, the occasional moment of frustration seeing him on the wrong side of the referees.

In Turkey though, he nearly started a riot!

Rangers fans are passionate and the Old Firm derby is as big as they come but football in Turkey during the 1990s was on a different level in terms of ferocity of atmosphere.

Can you imagine Michael Beale planting a Rangers flag in the centre circle at Parkhead after winning the league?

There would be a national enquiry, a parliamentary summit and calls for titles to be stripped.

The scary thing is, I’m only half joking.

One thing every club got from Souness, whether as a player or manager, was commitment.

He might not be coming back in an official capacity to Rangers but Graeme Souness would bring a presence behind the scenes and as a notable representative of the club.

As a man who started a revolution, who returned the required standards to the club, his is a voice that will always carry weight.

Just don’t let him near the flags on derby day!
