Gordon Parks delivered a scathing assessment of James Tavernier on the Record Rangers Podcast.
The 27-year-old who signed from Wigan Athletic in 2015, has outstanding stats this season.

His tally of 23 direct goal contributions is unparalleled in the SPL.
The majority of his eleven goals have come from the spot, but twelve assists is remarkable.
Nevertheless, he has come under heavy fire for his defending at times. Many fans feel it’s not his priority and that he exposes Rangers against strong opposition.
It seems Record journalist, Parks, agrees.
“If you can get £4 million for him, you’ve won a watch”, he said on the Record’s Podcast, when asked whether or not Rangers would benefit from a more defensive minded right-back.
“He’s part of the problem.”
“If he’s walking out of the tunnel and leading your team, he lacks the personality and the leadership. I think it’s indicative of the way Rangers fail.”
“I don’t particularly rate him as a defender…he’s too passive and meek…I’ve not been a massive fan.”

Criticism harsh
For me, Parks’ comments are a little over the top. Perhaps he has a point that someone like Allan McGregor looks a more suitable captaincy candidate.
There have been one or two lapses from Tavernier, but he’s far from a passenger in defence. His display in December’s Old Firm proved that.

Gerrard’s side have looked a little shaky at the back recently.
However, the main issue this season has been failing to break down the opposition.
Their captain has been the main source of creativity all season long.
Therefore, instead of pointing fingers at him, questions should be asked about how the right-back has directly contributed more than anyone else, to the overall goals tally.
