Former Rangers striker Gordon Dalziel could not believe his eyes after what transpired in Scotland’s 4-1 win against Curacao on Saturday.

Scotland had a successful outing before they boarded the flight to the United States on Sunday, beating Curacao 4-1 at Hampden on Saturday.

Steve Clarke’s side got off to a poor start, with Tahith Chong putting the visitors in front just 16 minutes into the game, but a red card for Jurgen Locadia in the first half tilted the game in Scotland’s favour.

The Tartan Army went on to run riot over Dick Advocaat’s men, as Lawrence Shankland bagged a brace, while Findlay Curtis and Ryan Christie grabbed a goal each.

It was a productive outing for Rangers players, with Shankland scoring twice in his first match since signing for the Ibrox outfit last week.

Meanwhile, Curtis made his first start for Scotland and marked the occasion by opening the scoring for his side in the 44th minute.

Reflecting on the goal, Dalziel admitted that he was delighted to see the Rangers man get on the scoresheet for the national team.

However, the former Gers man could not believe the standard of goalkeeping displayed by Curacao’s No. 1, Eloy Room, and hit out at the veteran for his failure to deny Curtis.

Dalziel described the 37-year-old as one of the worst goalkeepers he has seen and claimed that he would not have let him back on the team bus if he were the manager.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, he said: “I’m not taking anything away from the boy [Curtis]. Brilliant for the boy. I was delighted to see him getting a goal, especially at Hampden in the build-up to the World Cup.

“But gee! Honestly, I’d have taken him off, taken his gloves off him, and just sent him up the road. He’d not have gotten back on the team bus for me.

“I have never seen a goalkeeper like that in my life. That was terrible, mate.”

Rangers players eye fruitful 2026 FIFA World Cup

While Shankland and Curtis got their names on the scoresheet, John Souttar and Liam Kelly got some valuable playing time under their belt.

The Rangers quartet then flew to North America with the rest of the Scotland squad on Sunday, with their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign kicking off against Haiti on 14 June.

There was some hope that Connor Barron would earn a late call-up to the squad after Billy Gilmour suffered an injury against Curacao and was ruled out of the tournament.

However, Clarke opted to pick Tyler Fletcher instead, calling Barron on Sunday morning to inform him of the decision.

Nevertheless, Danny Rohl will hope that his players have a fruitful time at the World Cup this summer.
