As the global pandemic grips Rangers, Scotland and football clubs across Europe, it appears not even global and Spanish footballing giants Barcelona are immune.
The La Liga outfit will reportedly ask its team of superstars to take a wage cut as the health crisis takes hold and according to AS Diario, the players won’t offer up any major opposition to it.
For a club with players like Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann to be struggling amid the domestic league shutdown, it shows the gravity of the situation we’re also experiencing in Scotland.
Whilst there has been no official comment on the financial side of things from Rangers, it’s hard to envisage a scenario where the club’s directors won’t have to dig deep during this troubling period.
Hearts have been quick to move to try and save money during the shutdown, asking their players and staff to take a 50% pay cut during this period.
Club captain Steven Naismith has come out fighting the club’s corner, releasing a statement about his plans to accept Hearts’ offer [Hearts].
The British government also plans to pay 80% of wages up to a certain amount every month, with a Premiership club source claiming it will help clubs out [Not the Old Firm].
But the fact global footballing institution Barcelona is being affected financially by the crisis just highlights the scale of the problem which is sure to ravage clubs across Europe.
