When Joe Aribo chose a move to Rangers in June ahead of multiple other interested clubs, Steven Gerrard was seen as the key factor behind his decision [Express].
However, based on comments made by Glen Kamara, quoted by the Scottish Sun, Aribo had another influential voice in his ear at the time.
It transpires that the two players had known each other for some time before their respective Rangers moves.

“Joe and I have known each other for a good few years through playing five-a-side with each other and having mutual friends”, said the Finland international, as quoted by the Scottish Sun. “Even last year we were playing, in Croydon if I remember.
“It’s normal five-a-sides, some are in West London, some are South London. It just depends where the game is at.”

“I messaged him and told him what it was like and tried to encourage him to come. He asked me a lot of questions about Rangers. I told him the expectations were massive and it’s a big club, the fans are crazy.”

Verdict

It’s interesting to hear that these two quality midfield performers knew each other before they became Ibrox teammates.
There’s no doubt Stevie G was a major influence in bringing Aribo to Ibrox.
However, it’s likely that Kamara’s presence also played some role. Both players operate from similar positions and are the same age.
It was a big move up to Scotland for Aribo and having a friend already in situ was a handy aspect of the transfer.
Let’s hope they can bounce off each other throughout the season, and help steer the Gers to silverware.
