Rangers used to pride themselves on never having sacked a manager for most of their ilustrious 150 years as a football club.
With eight in the last 10 years, it is clear that the Ibrox hot-seat has lacked the stability of previous decades and that the door to the gaffer’s office has been a revolving one.
What doesn’t help Philippe Clement as the current incumbent as manager is the instability off the pitch with four key roles all absent and needing to be addressed by John Gilligan.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst linked with Everton job
A club in similar, if not worse turmoil than Rangers, is Everton and a surprise name has emerged to replace Sean Dyche with his job hanging by a thread.
Currently sitting in 16th place, the Toffees will be desperate to hold onto their unbroken top flight status with a new stadium to move into next season and it could be former Gers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst that leads them out, if reports from Turkey are accurate.
According to Dirilis Postasi, the Besiktas boss is at the top of their list to replace Dyche, should the axe fall:
“It has been revealed that Beşiktaş’ Dutch coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst is on the radar of Premier League team Everton.
“It is almost certain that the Blues, who are in 16th place in the league, will part ways with manager Sean Dyche. It has been claimed that Everton are considering Giovanni van Bronckhorst as their first choice for manager.”
Van Bronckhorst stock on the rise after Besiktas start
Besiktas currently sit third in the Turkey Super Lig, with a game in hand and unbeaten after seven games with five wins and two draws.
A 5-0 hammering of Galatasaray in the Super Cup got the season off to a flyer, however, as in his second season at Rangers, he has come under fire for some heavy defeats in Europe, including another 4-0 loss to Ajax.
As a former Feyenoord player and manager, he must really hate that place now.
Van Bronckhorst’s time at Rangers was relatively short and, with hindsight, it’s fair to say that he wasn’t dealt the best of hands to play with.
He inherited a lead in the league but ran out of strikers and had to content with an ageing squad that was at the end of its cycle.
Recruitment the following season was questionable too with Ben Davies and Ridvan Yilmaz signed for big money with little return.
He had wanted players like Evander, Xavi Simons and Danilo Doekhi but got Rabbi Matondo and Tom Lawrence instead.
Add this to the crippling injury list that saw him having to play Leon King and James Sands as a centre-half pairing and it is easy to see why things went wrong.
He’s bounced back at Besiktas and has his team playing well domestically up against the big spenders.
