Speaking to Sky Sports, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has hinted that he would like to become Rangers manager in the future.

The 45-year-old old is the current boss of Chinese Super League club Guangzhou R&F, having taken over in January.

He enjoyed a hugely successful three-year stint at Ibrox as a player, winning five major trophies, before joining Arsenal for £8 million in 2001.

He says that while being appointed at an English top-flight club is his ultimate goal, he wants to take charge of all the clubs whose strips he pulled on as a player.

“At the moment I’m enjoying my work in China,” Van Bronckhorst told Sky Sports. “But as a player I had ambition and as a coach I have ambition.”

“The Premier League for me is the number one league in the world to be working at and, for me, it is definitely an ambition to work in.

“I always said if I could coach the teams I played for it would be a big dream.”

GVB has already ticked one such club off his list.

After a stint as an assistant, he managed his boyhood club Feyenoord between 2015 and 2019 and masterminded an Eredivisie win alongside two KNVB Cup successes.

It was a surprise for many that – after leaving of his own volition, taking a brief break and then reportedly spending time working with Manchester City and their associated clubs [Telegraaf] – he accepted a post in China.

The Chinese Super League is commonly seen as a place for a big payday for players and coaches approaching the end of their careers and is unlikely to be viewed as ideal preparation for becoming boss of one of his former clubs.

It seems he is set on returning to Europe at some stage, though.

Steven Gerrard currently has the support of the Rangers board and fan base but if the 2020/21 season ticks by without any silverware, perhaps GVB will come into contention.
