Gio signing fighting for minutes after Rangers B horror show

John Souttar looked back to his best for Rangers against Hibernian at the weekend, a solid defensive display saw the centre-half also contribute to the attack in a performance that should give him the edge over Ben Davies.

The 27-year old has seen high profile errors blight other wise solid displays but, under new management, he will be keen to impress.

Playing for Rangers B team, Ben Davies had a similar chance against good opposition but caught the eye for all the wrong reasons.

Rangers woes continue for Ben Davies

The reported £4m signing from Liverpool has never had it easy since moving to Glasgow and faces a tough fight to get his starting jersey back after being the subject of a bid from Stoke City in the summer.

Against Breidablik, partnering Leon Balogun, he looked like a player who was short of match practice.

Rangers were 3-1 down at half-time with Robby McCrorie not being able to do much about any of the goals, Ben Davies, on the other hand, should have done better.

It’s unfair to single out Davies on his own because Robbie Fraser, playing at left back, seemed uninterested in tracking his man or in any rush to get back into shape but the more experienced defender should have been in control.

The first goal was a tap in at the back post that either Davies or Fraser could have dealt with but left the Breidablik striker unmarked.

The second saw Fraser cough up possession and Davies not react quickly enough to cover.

And the third was almost a repeat of the first except the initial effort hit the wood work only for Fraser to be ball watching when he was favourite to get to the rebound.

In all three instances Rangers should have cleared the danger and Ben Davies could have attacked the initial ball better.

If he wants to put pressure on John Souttar, putting on such a powder puff display infront of Philippe Clement is not the way to go about it.
