Steven Gerrard doesn’t want Swansea man Nathan Dyer or Ryan Gauld, according to the Daily Express.

It’s thought that the Rangers manager’s only real priority between now and the closure of the window is a third centre-back. This is to help Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic as the Gers don’t have any cover should either pick up an injury.

Gerrard claimed he’s been asked about Dyer in the past, but stated there’s “nothing in it”. The Liverpool icon also used the exact same phrase when discussing Gauld.

No Dyer or Gauld

It makes sense given the cover Rangers have all over the midfield. The Ibrox side have real strength in depth in every area with the exception of centre-back, where Gerrard wants one more body in.

However, the Rangers manager wasn’t so dismissive at the prospect of signing Joe Worrall. The Nottingham Forest centre-back has fallen out of favour at the City Ground. Worrall is widely expected to be Gerrard’s final transfer target.

The Rangers manager stated that the youngster is someone he’s been following for many years in England. It’s hard not to be impressed with him either.

Worrall was the captain of the England Under-21 side that won the Toulon Tournament last season. The defender broke into Forest’s side last season, but has struggled for game-time under Aitor Karanka.

Worrall speculation

There’s no doubting that Worrall would sort out the defensive gap in Rangers’ squad. The youngster has the potential to thrive under Gerrard, but it remains to be seen whether Forest would be prepared to let him go for nothing.

There’s also a lack of information on any potential replacements for Worrall should the deal fail to go through.

The demand for further competition at the back only increased further with Rangers’ 3-3 draw with Motherwell on Sunday. Defensive errors cost the Gers at Fir Park, and the addition of Worrall would give Gerrard the opportunity to rotate.
