One of Philippe Clement’s first decisions as Rangers manager will be who he targets to strengthen in the wide attacking areas and he could easily have been taking over a squad that had Jordan Ibe in it.

The former England Under-21 international and reported £15m winger was linked with the Light Blues in 2019, however, it appeared to be nothing more than rumours with his ex-Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard in charge.

He didn’t join Rangers and, instead, Jordan Ibe’s career has fizzled out when he should be approaching his peak after the announcement off his new club.

Rangers made right decision when the dodged Jordan Ibe

When Gerrard was in charge, having two wingers either hugging the touchline or tucking in were key components of his system.

It was an easy transfer rumour to create given that Rangers had already signed three players from Liverpool in his first transfer window.

What made the story seem like nothing other than paper talk is the previously mentioned fee that Bournemouth had paid for Jordan Ibe only six months before the Rangers “interest” was reported.

A six-figure weekly salary and a future international career has now seen Ibe sign for Ebsfleet United in the National League.

Battles with physical and mental health has seen the player who Gerrard said had a “terrific future” reset and go again.

Rangers might have been a good option on loan once upon a time but Jordan Ibe’s fall from grace has been a spectacular one, especially considering that he is only 27-years old.

It’s a reminder that when Philippe Clement hits the transfer market in January, that there are no guarantees that whoever he signs is going to be a success, regardless of how much he spends.
