When Steven Gerrard said the other day that he “wasn’t interested” in the fact Rangers reached the summit of Scottish football again, you get the feeling he meant it.
Ryan Jack’s comments pretty much echoedhis Gaffer’s. The on-form midfielder was coy about Rangers chances this season, and reiterated the need to take each game as it comes.
But in saying this, were Gerrard and Jack hinting at something else? It seems, much like Rangers fans, the players and backroom staff let going top go to their heads.
Ryan Jack said:
“Going top of the league is great; it’s great for morale in the team and shows we are moving in the right direction.
“As the manager has said it is really too early to be talking about staying top of the league and doing this or doing that. It is just about staying focussed and taking each game as it comes.”
Complacency is easy to spot and hard to stop sometimes, but you could’ve wrote what happened next after we went top of the league. It was peak Rangers.
The fans and club celebrated as we reached the summit for the first time in seven years. But we tumbled down it before we had the chance to catch our breath.
Defeat to Aberdeen at Ibrox shattered a near perfect home record under Gerrard. The shameful draw against 10 man Dundee a few days later was arguably worse. The players did seem to have got carried away and lost concentration.
With the noises now coming out of Ibrox, from the staff and fans, it’s a mistake we’ll hopefully only make once.
