Rangers new boy Gareth McAuley could become an ideal mentor for youngster Nikola Katic.

The 38-year-old completed his move to Ibrox on Monday on a free transfer.

The defender was able to move outside of the transfer window since he was a free agent after running down his contract with West Bromwich Albion.

McAuley has become manager Steven Gerrard’s 15th signing since he took the reigns in May.

It has been a complete overhaul at Ibrox with an array of new faces coming through the door, young and old, loaned and permanent.

McAuley’s free signing though, might well have a significant impact on another summer arrival this season.

McAuley to mentor Katic?

Katic signed for the Gers from Slaven Belupo on a four-year-deal.

The 21-year-old has made an impressive start for the Light Blues and has formed a solid partnership with the outstanding Connor Goldson at the back.

The Croatia international is still very much in the early stages of his career.

He has started very brightly, and it can only be a good thing for him that McAuley has signed.

McAuley has a plethora of experience playing at the highest level and will undoubtedly help Katic to improve.

The former Baggies star will likely be able to pass on a lot of tips.

Crucially, he’ll also be able to help the youngster when he goes through his first rough patch.

Hopefully, of course, that won’t be in the offing any time soon – it certainly doesn’t look like it is.
