Four young Rangers players have been handed call-ups to the latest Scotland U17s squad.

In a press release on Friday afternoon, coach, Brian McLaughlin, named a 20-strong squad for friendly fixtures against Hungary and Sweden to be staged in Pinatar, Spain in February.

Goalkeeper, Jay Hogarth, defenders, Adam Devine and Leon King, and midfielder, Cole McKinnon are the Gers inclusions.

Rangers are the most represented club in this squad, with both Celtic and Aberdeen contributing three players apiece.

For all selected, it’s a reward for their efforts with the Academy over the first half of the season, during which success has abounded.

It was a silverware-laden 2019 for the club at youth level, with the Reserves, U18s, U17s and U16s all winning at least one trophy.

These four players have clearly stood out from the masses, though, and will soon get a chance to show their qualities on the international stage.

The standout name here is Leon King, who despite having only just turned 16, served as the first team’s 19th man for last weekend’s Scottish Cup Fourth Round clash against Stranraer.

That was likely part of a charm offensive as the club tries to convince the youngster to pen a professional deal, amid reported interest from the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea [Daily Record].

Here’s hoping there’s good news on King in the near future, with Rangers seeking to avoid a repeat of the scenario which saw them lose Billy Gilmour to Chelsea in 2017.
