Formerly Rangers linked striker Daniel Sturridge is available on a free transfer as a pair of US clubs reportedly compete for his signature [Daily Mail].
The Sunday Post were one of many outlets to link Sturridge with a high-profile switch to Ibrox following his release by Liverpool in 2019.
It was suggested that Steven Gerrard saw his former Anfield teammate as a potential replacement for Alfredo Morelos, but El Bufalo ultimately remained with the Gers and Sturridge headed to Turkey, signing for Trabzonspor.
The 31-year-old scored seven goals in 16 appearances for the Super Lig side, but his contract was terminated by mutual consent in March 2020 when he was hit with a four-month ban for breaching betting rules.
Remarkably, since then, the 31-year-old has been without a club.
That’s over a year out of professional football and even though Gerrard thinks highly of the former England international [Liverpool Echo], it’s very unlikely he would be tempted to make a move – especially given the player’s history of injury problems and high wage demands – even if there are plans in place to finally cash in on Morelos this summer.
It seems two MLS clubs are willing to take a chance on Sturridge, though, with the Daily Mail claiming that Inter Miami and DC United are fighting it out for his signature.
It’s stated that the Champions League-winning striker is seriously considering taking up the chance to head to the States, but he is also said to feel that he has unfinished business in the Premier League, with multiple unnamed English clubs reportedly considering moves of their own ahead of next season.
The chances of Sturridge moving to Ibrox may always have been slim, but multiple new strikers may well be required in the summer.
Alfredo Morelos has been consistently linked with a move away from the club, while a contract extension is yet to be offered to Jermain Defoe.
Another Rangers player will be staying on at Ibrox next season, though, after reportedly triggering a contract extension.
