Former team-mate backs ‘ridiculous’ Rangers star to outclass Celtic ace at Ibrox

Much of the pre-match coverage, ahead of Sunday’s Old Firm derby clash at Ibrox, has focused on the fitness of Callum McGregor.

After a couple of weeks out of action, this weekend’s trip across Glasgow appears to have come around too quickly for a return to Celtic’s starting XI. But Brendan Rodgers, revealing that his skipper has recovered ‘three or four weeks ahead of schedule’, is expected to at least have McGregor as part of his travelling party.

The involvement of Reo Hatate, in contrast, seems a little more clear cut. McGregor’s central midfield partner had missed most of 2024 with hamstring and calf issues but made his comeback against Livingston last time out, playing 65 minutes in that 3-0 away win.

And, if the nature of his performance is anything to go by, Hatate is suffering from few ill-effects, the stylish Japan international immediately back to his string-pulling pomp.

Rangers host Celtic and John Lundstram can play big role

Rangers’ hopes of a famous – and potentially decisive – victory over their despised rivals could rest largely on whether Philippe Clement can find a way to put Hatate off his rhythm. And man who played alongside one member of Clement’s roster is backing his former-team mate to come out on top against arguably the most technically-gifted midfielder in the country.

“When the chance came to join Rangers he wasn’t going to turn it down,” Daniel Lafferty tells the Scottish Sun of John Lundstram, who he played alongside at Sheffield United south of the border.

“He’s done unbelievably well for them.”

Lafferty needs no reminder of the tenacity, the power and the ball-striking prowess of the Liverpool-born 30-year-old. But while Lundstram might not possess Hatate’s highlight-reel, made-for-YouTube majesty, there is more to his game than sheer, unfiltered athleticism.

Lundstram vs Reo Hatate at Ibrox

“Technically, John is ridiculous. Left foot, right foot, he’s so comfortable. He’s also deceptively quick when he covers the ground,” adds Lafferty, the former Northern Ireland defender who started his career with Celtic.

“Lunny’s been brilliant for Rangers the last couple of years and delivered in some huge games, including big European games. “He’s got real personality as a footballer, that steeliness about him.

“He’s communicating all the time, even though it can sometimes be difficult understanding that accent!

“Lunny’s a match for any central midfielder. He’s played in the Premier League, so that tells you everything. Reo Hatate is certainly an exceptional midfielder for Celtic – but John’s capable of getting the better of him.”

Clement is expected to start Lundstram – who Rangers are desperate to tie down to a new contract – alongside Todd Cantwell and January addition Mohammed Diomande in the centre of the park. The Gers can go above Celtic with a win, while also retaining a game in hand.
