Rangers fans are watching the managerial situation unfold at Newcastle United with quiet intrigue amid links to manager Steven Gerrard.

The Gers boss has been mentioned for the role following a high-profile Saudi-led takeover of the club which is sure to result in mega-investment over the coming windows.

Steve Bruce is still in charge at St James’ Park – although the side are in the Premier League relegation zone – but there is a growing sentiment he won’t be for long.

Attention then turns to who will take his place with Stevie G one name repeatedly mentioned in the press.

However, ex-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was another option being mooted in the press as an Italian journalist claimed the Toon had settled on Gerrard’s former manager.

Gianluca DiMarzio gave substance to the reports claiming Leicester manager Rodgers was favourite for the role by reporting the manager was set to be targeted by the new Magpies owners.

The journalist also claimed that Newcastle were willing to meet the Foxes €16m (£13.6m) release clause for the manager in claims which would’ve settled any Rangers fan fears.

But UK media are now reporting that Brendan Rodgers would reject any approach from Tyneside should they come knocking.

Sky Sports News are claiming that they’ve been told Rodgers wouldn’t be interested in the job and believes there is much to be achieved with his Leicester City side.

That leaves the entire thing up in the air, even if there is little substance to the suggestion that Steven Gerrard would leave Rangers for Newcastle.

Similarly to Rodgers, Gerrard has been clear that there is still plenty to achieve at his current side but that won’t stop links continuing in the press.

Until Steve Bruce’s future is settled – one way or the other – then we suspect this coverage may roll on for a while yet.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard isn’t the only Ibrox figure being linked to Newcastle either with a key Ibrox star reportedly on the St James Park shopping list.
