Former Rangers wonderkid Billy Gilmour could feature for Chelsea as they take on Manchester City in tonight’s Champions League final.

The biggest club fixture in world football kicks off at 8pm in Porto and the 19-year-old has been named on the bench for the Blues.

Gilmour started his career at Auchenhowie and came close to being the Gers’ youngest ever first-team player when he was named in the 20-man squad for a Scottish Cup clash against Morton in February 2017, aged just 15.

However, he didn’t make it onto the pitch that day and was sold to Chelsea just a few months later for an initial fee in the region of £2m [Sunday Post].

Gilmour broke into the first team during the 2019/20 season and impressed many with his calmness on the ball and range of passing for such a young player.

A knee injury cut short his campaign and disrupted the start of his 2020/21 season, while he was linked with a return to Ibrox in January [Scottish Sun], shortly after Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as manager at Stamford Bridge.

However, the teenager ended up staying put and he made three consecutive Premier League starts at the beginning of May, impressing sufficiently to earn his first senior Scotland call-up ahead of the Euros.

The highest-profile of all club fixtures is his focus tonight, though, and he will be hoping to make it onto the pitch at some stage in Portugal, as Chelsea seek their second Champions League title.

In other news, a big decision made by the UEFA competitions committee could impact Rangers next season.
