Former Rangers winger Jordan Jones has been called up to the Northern Ireland squad ahead of their remaining two World Cup qualifiers.

Jones, who signed for Wigan in the summer and ended a troubled spell at Rangers, scored his first international goal for Northern Ireland in a friendly against Malta in May.

The 27-year-old winger signed for Rangers on a pre-contract in the summer of 2019 as Steven Gerrard looked to build his squad to prepare a title challenge.

But Jones’ time at his boyhood club didn’t quite go to plan. In his first Old Firm match, he was sent off following a rash challenge on Celtic defender Moritz Bauer and suffered a serious injury as a result.

His Rangers career never really recovered after that incident. That said, he did score in a win against Motherwell at the beginning of last season, prompting fans to get excited.

This proved to be a false dawn, however, with Jones and fellow ex-Rangers player George Edmundson suspended for breaching Covid regulations in November 2020.

The pair had attended a private gathering with people from outside their household and therefore had to isolate for 14 days. There was no coming back from that and Jones signed for Sunderland on loan in January 2021, followed by a permanent transfer to Wigan in the summer.

The winger – whilst yet to score for his new club – seems to be getting back to the kind of form that prompted Rangers to sign him in the first place with Wigan sitting top of League One.
