Last weekend, former Rangers winger Daniel Candeias hit the headlines after a stunning performance for his new club Genclerbirligi.
The 31-year-old scored a hat-trick and registered two assists in the first half, in a remarkable 6-0 away win at Antalyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig.
Goals in the 1st, 21st and 37th minutes secured the Portuguese his first-ever career treble.
It was an incredible individual display that helped the strugglers to their first league win of the season, lifting them off bottom spot.
His display even had some on social media suggesting Steven Gerrard had made a mistake in letting him go during the summer transfer window.
However, Candeias and his teammates were brought back down to earth with a bump on Sunday afternoon, as they lost 2-0 at home to Denizlispor.
There was to be no magic from the ex-Ger on this occasion, and he was substituted in the 84th minute. The result ensured Genclerbirligi stayed second from bottom on six points from nine matches [Soccerbase].
Candeias always ran himself into the ground for the Light Blue jersey and was one of the few positive acquisitions of the Caixinha era.
However, this is a reminder for any Bears who may be viewing his stint at Ibrox through rose-tinted glasses, that he’s inconsistent in terms of producing in the final third.
For example, in 52 appearances across 2018/19, he scored six goals and registered 12 assists, with three of the latter coming in the same fixture against Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup [Transfermarkt]. That’s not an overly impressive record.
So far in Turkey, he has three goals and three assists in 10 matches [Transfermarkt]. On paper, that looks a decent start, but when you consider what he produced last weekend, he only has one assist to show for his other nine appearances for Genclerbirligi.
