Former Rangers talent Cammy Palmer netted his first Linfield goal at the weekend as the Belfast club thrashed Carrick Rangers 7-0.

The former Gers Reserves skipper was out on loan at Clyde during the first half of the season but with his Ibrox contract nearing an end, he opted to cut short his stint at Broadwood and join the Blues on an 18-month deal [Linfieldfc.com].

Following a settling in period, the 20-year-old finally made his NIFL Premiership debut in a win over Larne at Windsor Park late last month.

He was then left on the bench for a defeat to Glentoran before playing the final half an hour of a 2-0 victory over Cliftonville last weekend.

After impressing in that outing, he was handed his first start in a home fixture against relegation candidates Carrick Rangers on Saturday and played the full 90 minutes as the Blues dished out a hammering.

Palmer netted his first goal for his new club with a brilliant strike in the 73rd minute.

After teammate Jordan Stewart had struck the crossbar, the ball was cleared to Palmer, who controlled with his chest before firing into the bottom right corner from 25 yards.

The win took the league leaders five points clear of second-placed Coleraine, who hold a game in hand.

David Healy’s men are back in action on Tuesday night against Dungannon Swifts and Palmer will be hoping he did enough to keep his spot in midfield, as Linfield push on towards what would be a fourth league title in five seasons.

Rangers are back in Europa League action on Thursday night and have been sent a warning by a Slavia Prague star in advance of the Last 16 second-leg tie.
