Former Ranger striker Kyle Lafferty is set for a final day battle with new club Sarspsborg, as they attempt to avoid relegation from the Eliteserien.

The 32-year-old striker had his Gers contract terminated by mutual consent in July [Rangers.co.uk] and joined the Norwegian club in August with them bottom of the top-flight.

Since then, he’s struggled in front of goal, notching just once in eight league outings and registering two assists.

Yet, results have improved since his arrival and going into the final weekend, there’s a real prospect of survival.

Remarkably, no side is yet confirmed as relegated, with two teams on 27 points and four, including Sarpsborg, locked on 29.

After all the games are concluded next weekend, two teams will be relegated automatically, while the third will go into a play-off.

Positively for Lafferty and co., they currently have the best goal difference of all the teams on 29 points [BBC Sport], but they face a tricky away tie at Lillestrom to finish, with their opponents one of the other teams locked on the same tally and similarly looking to avoid the drop.

During a 1-1 draw with Haugesund in their final home game of the campaign in front of just under 6000 spectators on Sunday evening, Lafferty came close to scoring, but his stinging first-half effort was denied by the opposition ‘keeper [Sarpsborg08.no].

A player who has always enjoyed a big occasion, he will be hoping to come up trumps on the final day and perhaps earn himself a contract extension.

His initial short-term deal is soon set to expire and in a recent Sky Sports feature, it was suggested he was keen on staying put in Scandinavia.
