Former Rangers player says Celtic clash could be biggest in 30 years

Former Rangers player Stuart Munro has spoken to the Scotsman, about the potential importance of the upcoming Old Firm clash.
The Gers haven’t tasted victory at Parkhead since 2010. The last time they had such a barren spell, Munro was involved in stopping the rot.

A 2-1 away win in April 1989 under Graeme Souness didn’t just restore pride, though, it signaled the start of a period of Rangers dominance.
“It was a very significant result and I think, if Rangers can win on Sunday, it will be equally important for Steven Gerrard”, Munro told the Scotsman.

“It would be another major milestone. People say Rangers are miles behind but I disagree. There have been big improvements – the run in Europe, the first Derby win for a while – and big steps forward.
“If Gerrard can make good signings in the summer and take it to the next level, then things can get even better for Rangers.”

Verdict

There’s no doubt that Sunday is a massive fixture.
The Gers overcame a big psychological hurdle win the 1-0 win at Ibrox earlier in the season. The likes of Joe Worrall, Ross McCrorie, Ryan Kent and Scott Arfield were outstanding on the day.
It’s a different proposition away from home though, and if they can take three points on Sunday it will be a major confidence booster.
It’s unlikely that doing so would spark a similar period of Rangers dominance.
Nevertheless, beating Celtic home and away would show that Gerrard’s side means business going forward.
