Former Rangers player Gerrard rated highly hasn't played a single minute since 2020 Ibrox exit

Former Rangers defender Jon Flanagan, who Steven Gerrard rated highly, hasn’t played a single minute of competitive football since leaving Ibrox in the summer of 2020.

Flanagan started his career at Liverpool where he played alongside the now Gers manager in the Premier League.

When he was released by the Reds in 2018 following injury problems and off-field controversy, Gerrard gave him a chance to start afresh in Glasgow.

The scouser made 39 appearances over the following two seasons – often operating at left-back – and received plenty of praise from his former teammate.

He won some supporters over with his no-nonsense tackling but injury issues persisted and he had lost a yard of pace, ensuring he was the least dynamic of the full-back options at the club.

Flanagan was released in the summer of 2020 and quickly linked with a return to England to play for Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town [The Sun].

However, when a move eventually did materialise months later, it was to Belgium, with Sporting Charleroi snapping him up in November following a trial period.

Things haven’t gone to plan for the 28-year-old on the continent, though.

By January, the Daily Record reported that he was in talks to rip up his contract and move to Poland, given that he hadn’t even made the bench for a Jupiler Pro League fixture.

His proposed switch to the Ekstraklasa never materialised and he’s still listed as a player on Charleroi’s official website, but he hasn’t played a single minute of competitive football for the Belgian club.

Flanagan didn’t make a matchday squad for any league matches before Les Zebrés’ season finished on 17th April.

It’s clear that life after Ibrox has been tough for the defender, who is soon set to become a free agent once again.

Meanwhile, Rangers fans believe that Steven Gerrard already has a ready-made replacement for Bongani Zungu at Ibrox.
