Former Rangers loanee Sheyi Ojo nets crucial maiden Cardiff goal

Former Rangers loanee Sheyi Ojo secured an important win for Cardiff City over Preston North End in the Championship on Sunday with his maiden goal for the club.

Ojo spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Ibrox from Liverpool and split opinion amongst supporters.

At times he looked an outstanding prospect and his long-range winner against Feyenoord in the Europa League was one of the highlights of the season.

However, he didn’t produce consistently and by the time the footballing shutdown came about in March, he had fallen out of favour.

Ojo returned to Anfield but given the array of world-class players currently on the books there, he was never going to compete for a first-team place this season.

Therefore, he joined Cardiff on loan in September and he’s since started each of their five Championship fixtures.

Before their trip to Preston on Sunday, the Bluebirds had just four points on the board and were languishing near the bottom of the table.

They moved up to twelfth with a narrow 1-0 win at Deepdale, though, and Neil Harris has Ojo to thank.

The former England youth international rounded off a swift counter-attack in the 52nd minute after being fed the ball 30 yards from goal, driving into the box and firing a fierce right-footed strike into the roof of the net.

It was a fine finish from the winger and an important first big contribution for Cardiff after he had failed to score or register an assist in his first four outings.

Now in his sixth loan spell away from Liverpool, he needs to produce consistently strong performances across the season, though, so he’ll be hoping this big winner wasn’t just an isolated moment of brilliance.
