Former Rangers defender Russell Martin takes over at MK Dons

Former Rangers defender Russell Martin has taken over at English League One side MK Dons as he looks to save them from relegation.

Martin had an ill-fated loan spell at Ibrox in 2018 after joining the club on loan from Norwich in January that year.

He has been promoted to the job of manager at MK Dons after originally starring as a defender for the side.

Following Martin’s spell at Ibrox, he would move to Walsall with his contract expiring at Norwich.

Martin would then join MK Dons in January this year after negotiating a release from his contract at the Bescot Stadium.

“I would like to thank Paul Tisdale for bringing me to the football club and for his hard work during my time here. We will always remember celebrating that special moment at the end of last season,” said Martin [MK Citizen].

“I must also thank Pete Winkelman and the board for placing their trust in me. I accept their challenge to improve on the recent results and the current league position, and I will give everything I’ve got to repay their faith.

“We’ve got work to do and we will need everyone working as one in order to achieve what we want to achieve – players, staff and fans included. We will turn this around together.”

Only 33, the job represents a real challenge for Martin with MK Dons currently sitting 21st in the League One table.

Former boss Paul Tisdale left the club over the weekend after a 3-1 defeat to Tranmere.
