Former Rangers defender, Bruno Alves, has signed a contract extension with Parma Calcio 1913, after an impressive season and a half in Italy [Parmacalcio1913.com].

The 38-year-old has committed to the Serie A club until June 2021.

Alves, who earned just shy of 100 senior international caps for Portugal, was brought to Rangers by Pedro Caixinha and spent the 2017/18 season at Ibrox.

He played fairly regularly, racking up 28 appearances in all competitions, and scoring twice.

However, he looked a little past his best and wasn’t able to make the defence as watertight as many had hoped.

Eventually, he was allowed to join Parma in July 2018, as new boss Steven Gerrard looked to build his own Gers defence.

Since then, he’s undergone something of a revival, racking up an impressive 50 top-flight appearances in Italy, and serving as Parma’s club captain.

Clean sheets have been hard to come by this season, with only five in 21 matches, but Parma are sitting an impressive seventh in the table, ahead of the likes of AC Milan and Napoli.

Clearly, the powers that be at the club are liking what they are seeing from the former Ger, and this new deal will take him through to just a few months shy of his 40th birthday.

While he was hardly a disaster at Rangers, few fans would have predicted that he’d be turning out in Serie A for three or four years following his departure.
