David Weir has spoken to the Glasgow Evening Times about James Tavernier.
The Rangers skipper enjoyed an outstanding 2018/19 season at Ibrox. He was a near ever-present in the side, appearing in an incredible 57 of the club’s 60 fixtures in all competitions.

His defending improved markedly, but it was in the final third where his performances particularly stood out.
He scored 14 goals and registered 14 assists in the SPL [Transfermarkt]. He does take the penalties, but even so, that’s more direct goal contributions than anyone else in Scotland.

Unsurprisingly, he’s been linked with a big move this summer, with Premier League sides Brighton, Southampton and Burnley [Daily Mail] among those mentioned.
Weir believes Tavernier has more than enough quality to succeed in England’s top tier.
“Undoubtedly he could go and play down in England,” he told the Glasgow Evening Times when asked about a possible Premier League move. “James is athletic and his final product is class.”
“He’s done it consistently. He doesn’t miss games or training sessions. He’s been captain at Rangers now for over a year so he’s got great quality and is a great person as well.

“Undoubtedly he could go and play. He’s a big asset. He’s handled playing for Rangers when it’s been difficult at times. He’s come through all the criticism which you always get. He’s handled it and has kept playing. He keeps getting on the pitch, affecting the games and doing good things.
“A lot of people will be looking at him undoubtedly. He’s got great quality and he plays the games which is a massive thing.”

Verdict

Despite not always being appreciated by Rangers fans, Tavernier showed incredible commitment to the cause last season.
He might not be the loudest or most bullish skipper ever. Yet, he leads by example on the pitch.
His stats and overall influence mean it’s no great shock that big clubs are interested in him.
However, it’s vital that Steven Gerrard finds a way to hold onto his man. With his overlaps down the right flank, Tav is crucial to the way Rangers play and even if he commanded an eight-figure fee, he’d prove very hard to replace.
